Abstract

Today, psychoactive substances are easy to get. This poses a serious threat to public safety and health, especially among young people as the most vulnerable social group. Students often face psychological and social pressure, which makes them more susceptible to risk. This underscores the need for enhanced prevention measures and educational programs aimed at supporting and protecting adolescents. According to the whitepaper on substance use prevention in the educational environment approved for the period until 2025, substance use prevention is an integral component of teaching and learning. Accordingly, educational organizations have to implement substance use prevention programs for underage students. This study collected the data from three focus groups — students, teachers, and administrators — on the implementation of substance use prevention programs. Focus group participants were asked to discuss the formats of sessions, their timing and duration, and the most effective implementation options. Administrators discussed resources, risks, deficits and potential areas for development. The obtained results were processed analytically. The study identified various aspects related to the implementation of substance use prevention programs. Students expressed a preference for the interactive format as the most informative. At the same time, teachers pointed out time constraints as the program should fit into the timetable of educational activities. Nevertheless, they clearly recognize the importance and necessity of measures to prevent addictive behavior. The administration of the educational institution emphasized a lack of resources for the effective implementation of such programs. Thus, an effective prevention program within an educational organization should focus on the receptivity of students and readiness of teachers and administration of the educational organization to introduce such programs as part of the curriculum. The research was carried out as part of the state-commissioned assignment of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, the topic Scientific and Methodological Support of Remedial and Preventive Programs in the Area of Underage Substance Use by Students.
